Fab Five: Birdhouses

March 6, 2009

I was wandering around the Web looking for bat boxes to try and head off the mosquito problem that’ll start up soon, but I was quickly distracted by loads of super-cute birdhouses and re-routed my search for new homes for all my feathered friends.

Herewith, my five favorites (so far):

  • From Design Public, the Hepper Roost birdhouse is made of rust-proof aluminum and comes in four fabulous, chip-free colors: red, blue, green (above) and silver. Its mod, space-age design is perfect for the discerning sparrow or robin.
  • One part DIY, one part pure genius—the Audubon Soda Bottle Bird Feeder at DWR. Simply put, it’s a zinc-alloy adapter that transforms any two-liter bottle into a squirrel-proof birdie bistro. At $15 a pop, you can’t beat this sustainably minded masterpiece.
  • Recycled billboards and other signage have become a de rigeur material for eco-friendly accessories, and Atelier BomDesign in the Netherlands is applying the look to the Billbirdhouse. Each is different, and features a unique perch, like the drawer pull on this cute blue one.
  • My last two faves are from the always dependable Smith & Hawken. The turquoise and green clay Buri birdhouses are handcrafted from clay, making no two alike, while this gray terra cotta owl is simply adorable.
